Is it worth the effort to actually remove the
torx screws to get the element out of the housing,
or can it be effectively cleaned just by spraying
some brake part cleaner into the sampling tube?

The car in question is a 1993 Ford Escort. I'm
pretty sure the MAF is gunked up, it's giving
codes 181 and 186 (181-system reached
rich adaptive limit, engine lean and 186-fuel
injector pulsewidth longer than expected or mass
air sensor lower than expected).

That's what I did. One of my torx screws is covered so I can't unscrew it..
But, by removing the cover of the air cleaner, and removing the air cleaner hose from the throttle body you can spray it clean. Plus you'll then be able to spay the throttle body clean too.
I did, started the car and a big puff of smoke came out tailpipe, then it ran just fine.

B12 Chemtool or non-Chlorinated brake cleaner works well for de-gumming the two sensor wires in the MAF. No need to take the MAF apart.
