My wife's 97 Contour Sport ATX was idling kinda crappy, so I wing over to NAPA and buy a new IAC for $45. I swap it in, and immediately is born the most obnoxious moose you ever heard! Summinabich. I reset the computer. Still moose. I drive it around. Still moose. Uncle. I quickly clean up the old IAC and swap it back in. Moose gone without a trace... What gives?

The above is the best explanation I have seen on the moose. I replaced the IAC on my 96 SE with the factory Ford one. Instead of the moose noise I get a vibration through the pedals, at certain idle periods. I do have a urethane insert in the front roll restrictor, which probably doesn't help. I think I would rather have the noise.

If you have not has a moose problem before, you probably have the old air intake duct and old hose. The first TSB 96-19-5 had a change of air intake duct, hose (air valve tube assembly)and resonator assembly. The second TSB 97-22-3 has a new hose and IAC (recalibrated).

My fix was to use the air intake duct from TSB-96-19-5 with the TSB 97-22-3. This was my experience but it could be different for you.

If you are thinking of doing it yourself the part nos. are F6RZ-9B659-CA for TSB 96-19-5, and TSB 97-22-3 hose F8RZ9H308AA and gasket E83Z9F670A. Check the FAQ Common Problems: Noises, to confirm the numbers. You can check the number on your new IAC valve to see if it is XS2Z9F715BA. I bought my parts from fordpartsonline.com (takes about a week) but you can probably get them at your local dealer.

Good luck.

That's the weird thing: I think the original owner had those TSB's done. I was only famaliar with the Moose from reading about it here. So I was dumfounded that a simple IAC swap would cause it. I guess the NAPA IAC is going back to the store, and I'll call it a job. Very weird. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Update: So now NAPA won't take back their shiitty howling IAC valve, since it was on the car and they say it's "used" now. It was on the car for 5 minutes! If anyone wants it, you can have it for $25/shipped.

Take the IAC to another NAPA, and bring the receipt. You can conveniently smudge out the store number and/or phone number so no communication can be done between stores..

clean it up really well, and tell them you bought it when you were across town, but you live on THEIR side. it makes more sense for you to go to THAT (the new) store.. they'll take it back in a heartbeat.

without a receipt, they will exchange it, still, for store credit.

only thing with that would be i beleive stores are now bar coding the receipts so that all they have to do is scan it, and since they would be all on the same computer system ...

so it would show where he bought it..

still makes sense to return it to a CLOSE store..
unless they call and the other store throw a fit about it.
