I searched and didn't see much if anything other than this Originally posted by procyon: No functional changes on the 2004 block. The only change coming up is for the 2005 block. They will be added a dowel hole for the CVT transmission for the Freestyle & Ford 500. BTW, the 3.0L for these cars will also have a cast crankshaft. (Not forged as you guys are used to).

Wow! Talk about going cheap this late in the game! The duratec has been around 10 years and they are going to start making cast cranks now. Better hold on to the old cranks and engines just for this reason.

No, you have to take the vehicle & drive cycle into account. The 500 & Freestyle have either a CVT or 6spd automatic. The higher stiffness of a forged crank is preferred for high rpm applications. In lower rpm applications, a cast iron crank can actually be preferrable. Since it is not as stiff, it tends to give a little more damping and can be a little smoother from what I've been told by crankshaft gurus.
And don't worry, the forged crank isn't going away. The 3.0L for the Fusion coming out later this year is basically a Mazda6 engine. Forged crank. VCT on intake cams.
The 500 & Freestyle 3.0L engines are being built in the newly renovated Cleveland Engine Plant #1.
All other V6 Duratecs are still built at Cleveland Engine Plant #2.

So this bites donkey balls. What are the odds the new Duratec35 is going to have cast crank?

Nice!
I think I speak for several of us when we say we like the forged crank as insurance for high power. I wouldn't feel nearly so comfortable making 300-400 HP on a cast crank. I've never heard anything good about cast cranks other than cost until you posted the part about better for constant rpm and damping of frequencies. I'm open minded because some castings are quite good though.

If Ford can bring out the new D35 with some nice HP/TQ, that might be something that saves the company. If they make it a damn flop with something lame ass like 220HP, then they might as well have thrown in the towel.
