Go to the link, it explains it. Basically its about how the US is contracting out work, but not just for construction work and civilian work but also security forces are now being used. This program states that this is partly due to the low enlistment levels in the military. I wish I was in the US now because I want to see this. To me this seems so strange, I had no idea we hired mercenaries until last year, well atleast not at the level we are now.

Are they mercenaries or contractors? Even security doesn't require much training.
FWIW we (with the UN) used true mercenaries during the Rwanda genocide... they actually achieved quite a bit of success against the warlords, but were ultimately recalled because most member nations didn't like the idea of funding soldiers of fortune.

I think there was an article link posted here once, it's from Esquire where the author follows a group of security contractors in Iraq, really good read: Hired Guns

That's a good article. I remember reading it when it was published...I can't picture Tucker out there but he seems to have done OK.

i watched that program. It was discussing how the US government is contracting out services and more and more protection of the "green" zone and VIPS, including bremer, iraq govt, and other US officials. Pretty good article. One thing that was real interesting is how these contracted "bodygaurds" make more than most US military personnel. You can make 400-1000 a day! and unlike the military you can leave anytime you want, not unlike those poor soldiers out there in there 3rd tour! I liked the one point where the guy was talking to the ?KPR? (haliburton company that does this contracting) spokeswoman and she was saying she had no idea how much things cost and what not and than they go to the military commnder of the base and hes like, oh hell i hold meetings everday and I know exactly how much we spend! LMAO stupid companies trying to lie!

That was pretty funny! These companies have every cost broken down to the piece and by the minute! I found it kind of interesting how many company big wigs and spokespeople were retired generals.

Yeah, well, you can thank Clinton for getting this ball rolling. It was the downsizing (or you can call it "outsourcing") of the 1990s that put so many of those experienced military types out of the service, and screwed up the DOD budget so hard. Because DOD had to cut so many personnel, companies that were able to invest in hiring pre-trained specialists in military logistics and infrastructure management found themselves in perfect position to pick up the slack. I'd love to see the ratio of armed escorts/bodyguards to management contractors...I bet the primary gun-toters are a relatively small fraction of the "civilian" contractor total there.
