First, this really showcases the sound
www.memenest.com/enginesound.avi (right click, save as)

I have the belt cover off there, because I am particularly suspicious that it may be something to do with that assembly right there. Are there any of you out there with a keen ear that can tell me what the deal is? I just replaced the water pump since the mechanic thought it was a bearing in it, but the sound persisted.

Remove the WP belt and see if it stops. If it doesnt, remove the serpentine belt.

Only run the engine long enough to verify the noise. (a few seconds should do it) with the WP belt off.

Ok, I just pulled off the belt, and, being nervous about running the engine with it disengaged I simply spun that top tensioner (the one with the spring) and I could tell easily that it was kind of rough when I spun it. Kind of like tiny bb marbles in there spinning around. I'm thinking this is it. What do you call the part, I tried looking up at autozone's website, but I'm unsure what it is callled. Just tensioner?

I would call it the WP belt tensioner

I would still start the engine without the belt to make sure that the noise is gone. You only have to run it for 10 or 15 sec to be sure. You wont hurt anything.

TUrns out, it's NOT the water pump tensioner. I removed the belt, and the sound persists. I guess it's time to break down and take it to a mechanic. I bet it's something bad and expensive internally :-/

Did you remove the serpantine belt and start it for a few seconds to see if it is on that side, as well?

Nope, I'm pretty sure that it was on the WP side... The serpentine belt looked really difficult to get at, so I left it. Dropped it off a (new to me) mechanic this morning. Let's hope they don't try and screw me, (they are AC Delco certified and so on) and that the diagnosis is accurate!

I guess it would have been worth the pulling off then... I can't believe that I couldn't pinpoint it! I had my ear paralell to the engine and moved it all over the surface of the engine as it ran. I think that I was biased by the first mechanic saying waterpump. After that, my focus was entirely on that one side, even though it was more subliminal than anything
