i have a problem with my 96 mystique 2.0 getting hot. it runs like crap, horrible gas mileage, real bad clattering(like detonation), and getting hot(especially in traffic). i had the colling system flushed, put a 180 degree t-stat in it, ran two bottles of fuel system cleaner through it. i did find that the converter was very hot(480 degrees and getting hotter), so i had it gutted(no check engine light), and it is still acting up. i am getting only 21-23 mpg, part highway part city. i have done everything that i can think of short of having the cover pulled off and the timing checked. the ford house here told me that is normal for this car, the t-stat housing is running about 260 degrees. that seems high to me, and my buddies. any help please.

BTW: the fan is working.

Go to the "Chevrolet" dealership and get something called
"TEC" or Top Engine Cleaner. Follow the directions on the can to decarbon the engine. I find it best to let it sit overnight if I can. I have had great results fixing knocking (detonation) motors with this. It might not fix all your problems but its a good start.

Do you have cabin heat? Is the radiator hot too?

If the radiator fan does not blow really hot...

  • check for airlock
  • check for a collapsed hose
  • check radiator flow
  • check waterpump

the radiator is at about 17? i think. i have already replaced two hoses. i told the ford house to check the pump flow the second time they had it. i am not sure how to check the flow on a closed system.

i already had the ford dealer decarbon the engine for me. still doing it. i did find what i thought was the converter stoped up, so i had it gutted. well, still doing it. so this takes me back to my original thought, the timing. anyone know if i can check it myself?
