I am having some difficulty replacing the driver's side headlamp on my 98 Contour. I have read the other forums and consulted my owner's manual and I am still stuck.

The problem I have is finding the third screw that is behind the headlamp. I have removed the top two screws but I cannot locate the third screw. Can someone help me to locate this and tell me the best way to remove it?

Thanks.

I'm at work, so can't take a photo. I just ran out to my car... I'm assuming you got the 2 obvious screws. The 3rd is hard to miss, I had some trouble the first time I needed to replace a bulb. The 3rd is down between the back of the headlight and the battery. But down inside, think at the base of the battery. Stand above the headlight looking straight down, then lean into the engine bay a little, you should see it. The passenger's side is even harder, as it is hidden in some cables.

Once you locate it, just use a longer screwdriver and unscrew it. Then pull the whole headlightassembly out the front. the wiring and bulb sockets will be obvious on the back. Twist the bulb housing to get them loose.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that quick reply.

Will I need to remove the battery to get a screwdriver down there? Is the screw vertical or horizontal?

No, you don't have to remove the battery. The box is what gets in the way, but you don't have to remove that either. The screw is vertical, just put a flathead screwdriver in vertically and unscrew it most of the way, the headlight should slide right out. If you remove the screw completely, you run the risk of dropping it and losing it someplace.

No problem. I know so little, that when I can help, I try to.

I suppose that depends on your battery, but I have not had to remove anything to get at it. A regular size screwdriver will reach. I'm able to get my hand in there to catch the screw once it is unscrewed as well. It's not too tight, the passenger's side is a little tighter.

Did you find it yet? The head faces the hood, horizontally, same as the other two. It should look the same as the other two, but is just buried in there a bit. It holds down the back side of the light, you will see when you get it out. The backside of the light housing has a long bracket on it, I don't know maybe 6-8 inches, and this bracket is held in place with this 3rd screw.

Good luck. Once you find it you will kick yourself for not seeing it earlier.

**It would probably be easier to not remove it all the way
(as the reply above state), just unjscrew it enough to let the bracket come free. I was worried that I would knock it loose, but it is a bit of trouble to get in and out... Next time I'm messing in there, I won't unscrew it any further than necesary.**
