I bought this 99 Contour with 58,000 miles about a month ago and it ran perfect. the only thing thats wrong with it is when you rev it or when you accelerate you can hear a crackling noise which im assuming is a bunch of broken up material inside the Catalytic Converter and its just bouncing around inside of there. Well now, the car has progressively gotten really really slow. Now its to the point where it takes about 15 seconds to get to 60 mph!! The crackling noise has gotten alot quieter but i can still hear it a little bit, not as much tho. Also, on acceleration the engine is ALOT louder than normal. Im thinking the Catalytic Converter is clogged but im not exactly positive. Just wanted to know what you guys could think the problem is. Anyway to check if its the Cat before i go under there and remove it? THANKS

if its the cat it should still be under the manuf. warr...something like 8/80,000 for emissions...

Check engine light (CEL) on?
Any odors, is it getting hot?

is the crackling noise only while the car is under load (in gear)? or does it happen while revving in neutral?
if it sounds more like it's coming from the motor than the exhaust it could be valve pinging, again whether or not your CEL light is on could help troubleshoot this.
