My wifes 98 contour GL 2.0 Ztech started blowing warmer than normal air from the vents in both normal and MAX A/C. I checked the pressures low side 48PSI and high side 290PSI. I noticed the compressor is not cycling, It stays engaged constantly when in either A/C setting. does anyone know if this vehicle's A/C compressor is supposed to cycle? I have read that some A/C systems use a variable displacment pump or other restrictions in liew of a cycling clutch. I thought every newer A/C system used the cycling clutch. My 97 escort does. thanks in advance.

I'm not sure but I think that your high pressure is too high.
The compressor is suppose to cycle, it's not normal to be constantly engage.

Step A4 states that if the pressure is higher than 50PSI on the high side (after A1 A2 and A3 are verified to be in working order) then replace the A/C Cycling switch, as seen below:
Connect gauge set to port. High side reading must be above 169 kPa (50 psi).
l Is the high side pressure above 169 kPa (50 psi)?
�¨ Yes INSTALL a new A/C cycling switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
�¨ No CHECK and REPAIR the refrigerant system for leaks or low charge or incorrect A/C compressor clutch air gap. TEST the system for normal operation.
I know there are a ton of tests on that list, but I will be ready to elaborate more on any tests you come to, if need be.

Both pressures are high, this would normally indicate that freon was put in the system when not needed (for instance because the temperature air door quit closing completely causing some heat).
And yes, it won't cycle if the low side stays above about 27 psi.
