I have a 98 SE, AUTO V6 Duratec. No mods, but have replaced: MAF, IAC, Upper and Lowers, most of the tubing, had the Precats replaced under warenty, new battery, and fuel filter. Sorry, but I have looked extensively through this web site and found nothing on this problem. My transemission shifts erraticly when the o/d is on or off. It shudders from 2nd on up and on the freeway over 65 it does it about every 5 to 10 seconds. I took it to AAMCO here locally and they said it was not my tranny. I had a friend drive it and he said FORDS are notorious for having tranny problems. I do not have the money to get a new tranny.......HELP

Welcome to CEG!

Interesting to say the least.

Some possibilities are:
  • Bad TSS
  • Corroded tranny electrical connector
  • Low or bad fluid

Anyone else???

I'd do the following:

1. Check fluid level
2. Replace TSS (Turbine speed sensor) see transaxle forum for how-to's.
3. Replace manual shift position sensor on top of tranny.
4. Check wiring going to atx, is the insulation falling off and are the wires bare? If so you will need a new harness.
5. Replace ECT sensor (engine coolant temp) not the one for the dash gauge - it affects atx shifting

If you still have problems after the above then I would suspect solonoid shift pack.

Check your plugs and wires. You may need a tune-up.
