Amen....I had nothing but problems with 2 different Alpine HUs and 3 different Pioneer HUs. The 3 different Sony HUs I had never had a problem. I owned 2 different JVC HUs didn't like them too much.
I've had Audiovox, Jensen, Craig, Sony, Panasonic, Kenwood, 2 Pioneers...etc
Except for the 2nd Pioneer, wasn't impressed with any of them, in the slightest. They were just there, something that was a bump-up from stock. The 2nd Pioneer [paid Crutcfield about $550.00 for it in 1999] was good, but the display was so dim that it might as well not have even been there.
I'll have to wait and see [Monday] how /////Alpine strikes me.

Well you all know what I tend to recommend... I have more, one of my old 7838, thw 7861, and my current 9835... just need to scan them... I have NEVER had a problem with any of them (except the 7998 which was damaged by it's previous owner who I think tried to repair it himself) Alpine's interface is easily one of the best on the market, although I do not like the glidetouch so far. Maybe with some tweaking it will improve.

I've owned Panasonic, Pioneer, JVC, Kenwood, and Clarion, and my favorite of all of them have been my Kenwoods... I've had three of them! (+ KW amp and component speakers and JVC subs)

Definetly stick with Alpine over Pioneer, especially if you plan to expand your system, Alpine has more/better options for controlling sound.

I think I'm going to get the Pioneer Premier P8MP (funny name, I know! haha). I can get it for $300 online, and slightly less new on ebay. Seems like it has a lot of nice features for the price. However, it is tempting to save $100 and just get the Pioneer 770MP, which I found for $200 shipped. Haven't ordered it yet, but should sometime within the next week or so
