Is it possible for a mechanic to have damaged the steeering box seals during a clutch replacement? Mine seems to have started leaking from the steering boots right after that job was done.

The "steering boots"?

You are referring to the CV joint boots, just inside of the hubs/rotors?

If so, it is VERY possible (I've had it happen to me when a mechanic replaced MY clutch.) Normally around the metal retaining ring, but can be punctured anywhere along there, sure. VERIFIABLE, though? no.. It would be HARD to prove they did it.

If you mean the bellows on the end of the steering rack, the true leak is the rack seals further inside. It is not likely that it was damaged from trans work.

Thanks, Big Jim.
I've been away from the forum for a while - had to replace my computer.
Actually, Haynes refers to them as boots. I know that the seals are the leaky bits.
I was sure hoping that I could pin this on the mechanic because it looks like a big job - dropping the subframe and removing the steering gear - to replace the seals.
Bummer!
