My question is this, on the dyno, I post 3-4 more HP with a KKM vs a stock airbox and K&N filter on a 98 SVT. Is this extra gain just as a result of the hood being open? I mean once the hood is closed and the temps go up a bit, is the stock airbox going to far outperform a KKM ?

I know this is beaten to death but I need users opinions on it. Logic would tell me not to worry about the dyno...

A K&N drop-in is worth about 1HP on stock & 1-2HP on an SVT.

2000 SVT #674 13.47 @ 102 - All Motor! It was not broke; Yet I fixed it anyway.

So how does that 1HP gain compared to a KKM with the hood closed sucking hot air? I dont mean to try and make the KKM or other open air filters sound bad but I'm curious if the gains are still there once the hood is closed. For overall performance on the street/strip, which is better?

Thanks

Comments like those give away the brown spots on your nose!

Without a shield, I noticed hardly any difference. With a CAI, I noticed more torque made in the mid rpm range (but this is with an svt TB). I want to say that an unshielded cone filter -alone- just does it's job and no power gains are really made.

There will only be a benefit in stop and go traffic or idling at a light. Once you get your car rolling 30mph there is enough fresh air flowing for an airbox to have a negligible advantage over an open cone filter in the engine bay.
However, while you're staged at a drag light and the heat is soaking, you will have to be almost into the 1/8th mile before that good fresh air really has an effect.
The best would be to have a fender mounted filter, as big as you can fit feeding a 3" intake pipe, or a nicely designed airbox with filter being fed by at least a 3" pipe or bigger.
The stock airbox is too restrictive with too many 90 degree turns.
A stock SVT airbox is pretty decent for an average contour but the restrictive opening through the fender is just too small for it.
On my 3L my SVT airbox w/K&N drop in was a dyno-verifiable restriction, to the tune of about 5 HP!

Ive been going back and forth in my own mind as well as if i should go back to an open filter.

Right now i got the drop in K&N with the bottom of the box cut out. I do notice a nice differnce but im wondering if i could get more outta her if i go back to an open filter.
