Heat JUSt the pulley up with a propane torach so it gets nice and hot, but not too hot, then as it cools spray on some PB Blaster or liquid wrench around the journal so it loosen it up, then pull it off with a bearing-type puller.

Jam something through the holes in the pulley (like screwdriver, etc. - I'm guessing you won't be re-using the alt!) and into the alt. to hold it in place, then just use a regular breaker bar to loosen the bolt. Pretty straightforward actually.

There are no holes in the altternator pulley but do you think maybe i could drill a hole in to get a scrwedriver in it as i dont have access to a propane torch ?

I wouldn't drill it cos if it doesn't end up coming off you will be SOL as the pulley will be out of balance and it'll toast the bearing in the alternator.
Did you use an impact gun on it to reomve the nut, and liquid wrench?
BTW the mini propane torches are cheap from the local harware store, they run like $20 in the plumbing section. You should be able to find 'em in the UK too.
