Help! My 1999 Contour SE V4, 2L is having some major problems. When I try and pull out onto the highway from a side street or driveway, the car just does not want to go. It sort of chugs along, you have to pull over to the side, brake completely and then try to go again. Sometimes it will work correctly right away, sometimes not. We have replaced the fuel filter, used tons of Seafoam, new spark plugs, changed the oil, new oil filter, had the timing belt checked, but nothing makes a difference. It does this only randomly, so we are having a hard time actually being able to figure out what's wrong. From three mechanics we've heard three different things, the VCT cam timing is bad (expensive to repair), the fuel pump (not as expensive) and a sensor. Only prob I see is we start replacing the smaller things and the cost just keeps going up. Any advice? All the mechanics are a bit uncertain as it only does this sometimes, not all the time. Plus...before I forget...we've had the car run out of gas before, when the guage still states we have at least 1/4 tank. What's going on??? HELP!!!!

When you say chugs along, do you mean it chugs then dies? Then you try it again? Also, when pulling onto a highway you're usually going at an angle i.e. turning, classic signs of a bad fuel pump (the car dying when taking a turn). Since you have a 99 it could be a dirty sock filter since I'm assuming you have a return system. Can you check to see if you have a return or returnless sytem? I may not be able to diagnose this, but giving out more info. about it will most likely help one of the gurus on here help you out.
(Just for yourinfo, post problems about the vehicle in the troubleshooting forum. People most likely won't help you since they will never see it, since this is in the wrong forum.) Anyways, good luck!

I still LOL when I see "V4". One of 'cars 101' lessons, V means piston layout, and no car maker ever made a V4. (Maybe in Russia?)

Saab put a V4 in the Sonett. Looks like it was built by Ford!

Sorry about that! My husband just set me straight on that too. What I mean is it is a 4 banger. So, he replaced all the ignition wires, spark plugs, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and a bunch of Seafoam...but still no luck. Any suggestions? The car last night was crusing around 65 and suddenly began a very gentle chug, like the engine was trying to compensate for losing power or something. What a mess!

RogerM60 posted this for you in the Zetec thread:
Fuel pressure problem TPS MAF connections Transmission
Not likely to be the VCT.
Check for codes.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Yeah, Ford did build a V4. It was in their prototype Mustang in the early 60s...never, ever released, though.

Early Cortinas built by Ford also had V4 engines IIRC.
I do agree that it sounds like a fuel pressure issue caused by the fuel pump, either cloged or going out.
