I can't find the other post about this. The question was: after all the years, gunk built up in the SVT upper intake; will the extrude hone still be useful after all those years?

AirKnight,

IMO…The black crap build-up, totally negates the extrude hone.
Here is my post where a asked the same question: http://contour.org/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=002393

Not much traffic on that post, but I can tell you from fist hand experience that the upper intake fills up with crap. David Z posted a good explanation in the post above. As soon as I cleaned my upper intake and secondary butterflies (also coated with crap) I felt a big difference. The car pulled much harder and the secondary kick-in was much more pronounced. Keep in mind my car had 60k worth of build-up.

Btw… all of the other 60k maintenance I did (and I did it all) was good, but I could not feel any performance gains. That said, when I cleaned my upper… I could feel the difference smile .

This is what your looking for???

When I first did this, The inside of the upper looked like there was moss growing in there. Cleaned up the Idle and I also changed plugs too. I can't for get to thank litrbox for the help. It was fun laugh

You will want to get either GUNK - throttle body cleaner/ or Fords throttle body cleaner. It is only like $2.50 or something.

Tools you will need: Flashlight, TB Cleaner-with the straw, screw driver for the clamps.

MAKE SURE CAR IS OFF RIGHT NOW!!!

You can skip this stage if you like.

First thing, see how bad you throttle body is. Take off the black hose that connects to your throttle body. Then you will open your TB while shining the flash light in there. You will see if your TB is built up with all kinds of gunk!!!

Once you have done this put it back togeather!!!!
---------------------------------------------
First thing, you will want to take off your stock cone filter. Take that part off. With that off, you have you MAF housing right there.

Then start you car, making shure no parts are in the way. Then connect the little straw to the can of TB cleaner.

Now, before you spray, remember this, make sure you don't spray in directly through the MAF, make sure the straw goes past the senser. YOu don't want that on you senser.

OK, before you spray, rev the motor up. There is a part ( Lack of knowlge of name) which you can activate the throttle from the engine bay right by the TB. The motor will start to die once you start spraying the stuff in. So you will have to throttle it to keep it running.
You want to spray for 10 seconds, then stop for 10 seconds or more letting the motor idle back down, then repeat this again, again, till the can is empty. By this time I am sure you have proble killed you car once maybe twice. While your doing this, you will notice black smoke come out of the exhaust! Don't worry about it, that is the cleaning process.

Make sure you read the can, this always builds some extra security.

If your throttle body looks nice and clean, then chances are the intake manifold is clean too? right?
Also that black gunk right after the throttlebody, just into the manifold, not supposed to be there? or is it?

-just curious

If your EGR is working properly, then the whole intake should be covered in black crap. Other manufacturers (Honda) used to have the EGR gases pumped directly into the engine right above the intake valve. This would keep the black crap to a minimum as it contacted very little surface area before entering the engine. Now, it has to go to Detroit and back before it gets burned.

Where is my EGR plate, DAMMIT! smile

Thing is I cleaned the TB with those spraying stuff. But when I had the manifold off, it still look like crap inside...

I really don't think it is the EGR that gunks it up. It's the PCV system. When I had mine off a year ago, there was actually oily stuff collected in the upper gasket area. EGR tends to deposit sooty carbon stuff.

You'll likely have to clean it when it's off the car. It's not hard to remove and only takes about 15mins to remove it. I had mine off when I was inspecting my secondaries and found the same thing, so while I was insp. I had it soaking in combustion chamber cleaner then rinsed it out with hot water. It may take a couple of times to get it clean but it's worth it.

did you replace the gasket when you did this, or just use the stock one? I might have to do this before going to the track again on June 22nd. I am also thinking of replacing my plugs and wires too.... any little thing to get my car back to full power...
