I know that we have a lot of IT people here and I wanted some advice...

I have a project for school that requires alot of info about OpenView. I've been searching around online for information but its difficult to sort through the marketing BS and the real useful info. So I have just a few questions.

1) Price!! this is a major one I haven't a clue on the price and google (froogle) has absolutly nada.

2) How does the license work on it? The example company that I have is a local bank with 1 office and 5 branches, it has over 5000 nodes and most of those would be work stations and Automatic Teller Machines

3) What are some good plug ins to use for the banking industry?

I already plan on using NNM and VantagePoint (Oracle DB.)

The main areas I need to hit are:
1) Office automation ie file/print/mail servers and electronic fax
2) Systems management ie System monitoring, backup, and help desk
3) Network management, network and gateway monitoring
4) Banking software management ie SAP systems

I think I may be in over my head with this project.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

From what I remember about Openview is as follows:

It's a single software "solution" ( I HATE that word... ) that has LOTS of extras. Extras such as Remedy modules for ticketing systems, BMC Patrol integration modules, Cisco modules and such.

1) Depends on the number widgets you need. It's a rather large number, plus, a support contract is generally negotiated with it. So, depending on how many and the level of support needed, it COULD range from $20k up to hundreds of thousands, not to mention re-occurring support agreements and such.

2) Again, it depends on what you need. Each module/widget/whatever comes with its own licensing agreement. In your case, sounds like you'd just need one instance of Openview to handle whatever you need for all 5 areas.

3) HP Openview products

Most of your networking equipment (and some systems) can/will use SNMP, so the SNMP agent would cover that. There are Oracle plugins, UNIX plugins, etc. There are also third party plugins that I mentioned above.

Hope this helps... I'm sure someone else that has used Openview within the last 4 years will chime in. It's been so long since I've used it...
