Hey
I have recently stripped some teeth off of the platic gear in my sunroof motor, and now it will only pop up and close. Anyone know where to get a new gear, without having to buy the entire motor. I haven't had any luck finding just the plastic gear.
Thanks Mike

Have to buy a new motor... gear is not sold seperatly. $297.00 from the dealership (plus tax) or. Wait a month or two, there's a guy who is making new gears for us (he is using my sunroof motor to make prototypes). Talk is they will done in the next month or two at a cost of about 60 bucks. He is making them out of some hard resin type material, not the crappy nylon Hebasto used. I wouldn't buy a new motor from Ford becuase (sorry to say) it will strip out again. I've had the motor (gear related, ofcourse) replaced 3 times under my ESP warranty. And it went again a month ago... luckily Jeff came along with an idea and some progress is goin. Hope that helps.

Got one of those new gears from Jeff @ Odometer Gears. I have one of the samples, and it's working good. He said it's suppose to be harder and it felt like it. My sunroof is up and running again. I think he's gonna start running a bunch of them. He's just waiting for results from everybody who purchased the first lot.

Let's hope it's soon. I'm about ready to JB Weld a socket to the gear, cut a hole in the plastic cover and operate the damn thing with a 3/8" ratchet. I like open sky.

Same thing. I am getting really annoyed. I refuse to pay 300+ for a new sunroof motor that will just break again. Good luck getting one of those new gears before it starts snowing... I have been bugging the guy making the aftermarket gears and he said another 2 weeks. He has to fix something with his injection machine or something.
This whole process is really quite frustrating. Open offer: Anyone with one of those beta test gears I will give you 80$ for it right now. Its absolutly rediculous to have a sunroof in the summer that does not work.

What was really helpfull to me was just greasing up the track and the gear where the motor ataches to. That's how I stripped my gear. When I tried to force open the sunroof with just pressing and pressing. Jeff advised white lithium and it really lubed it pretty good. It used to be pretty noisy and slow moving. Not anymore.

hey you guys, read this! i e-mailed the company who makes the sunroof motor itself (webasto) and this is their reply!
Hello Josh,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding Webasto Roof Systems, and we apologize for the delay in responding. We were waiting to determine if we would be able to acquire any of these gears from the original European supplier, which are not traditionally offered separately from the motor. We were able to obtain a few of these, and are happy to offer a replacement gear to you free of charge. Please just confirm that the address provided below is the correct shipping location for the gear and we will send it out promptly. If you could also please let us know what you mean by "it seems to happen in ALL of them". Please give us the exact number that you are referring to and how you came to that knowledge. This information will assist us in researching and remedying any issues that may exist. Thank you again for your interest in Webasto.
I'll let you know if the gears actually come.

You can tell them that an online organization of owners/enthusiasts of Ford Contours/Mercury Mystiques and Mercury Cougars (numbering well above 11,000 members) have had it happen so commonly that we (CEG) have made it common practice to advise members on how to remedy their stuck sunroof problems. There is definitely a problem, and the exact number is somewhere between "one too many" and "all but one ever made."
Good luck with that new gear, though if its a replacement of the crappy soft plastic, you'll likely be in the same boat within the year.

i told them that i am a member of ceg already (i explained to them what ceg is), and that whenever the gear fails (which yes, happens way too often), the most common problem is that gear. i will be buying one from jeff anyway because when i bought a replacement the last time, maybe a month ago, i bought the whole assembly and i tried installing it, and the gear stripped with the first touch of the button. anybody know what i can do? maybe the sunroof is a little tight. I tried lubing the tracks with graphite but maybe there's an adjustment?
