DISCLAIMER
This is a fictional story. As messing with emmisions could be illegal in some states. wink

So anyway, I yanked the y pipe off and used a 3/8" bit to drill through the honeycomb on the back (no sweat, well maybe just a little sweat). Then used a screwdriver to break out the rest of the material. The tricky part was the front. First tried a flexible shaft with the bit on the end. The bit got caught up in the steel wool and snapped the shaft. No problem, I'll just yank it back out....right?....wrong! The shaft cam out with a firm tug, but.....the bit is still lost in the dark recesses of the cat. Time to switch gears I used a 3/8" bit to drill into the bottom of the pipe and then procedded to break out the rest of the honeycomb. Eventually the bit flies out along with some sizable chunks of honeycomb. Shop vac every once in a while to keep it clean and eek voila eek I tapped the hole and threaded a bolt into it for the time being until I can get it welded. Seems to hold good for now.

BONUS MOD
while I had the Y-pipe off I noticed a good 1/8" or better of a ridge in side where the two pipes y to one. I broke out the trusty die grinder and an hour later the inside of my y pipe was smoooooooth! I also sharpeded up the edge where the pipes come into one to smooth the air. Looks sweet and man you should have seen the amount of metal shavings on the ground. Probably shaved a pound of my weight!

Curiously I do not have a CEL yet. I am making MILs tommorow anyway. As far as a performance increase...I don't think it is near the 15% or so that some have thrown around. I do think the car pulls smoother through the rpm band and I hit the rev limiter twice while testing (something I never do) which tells me it is revving faster. I'm going to G-Tech as soon as it drys out around here.

Rumor has it that you can still pass emissions after gutting the cats.

Does the car seem much louder now?

Not much louder. Maybe a little deeper and a little less raspy. Less rasp probably due to the smoothing of the Y-Pipe. Have not made the MILs yet and still no engine light. I am curious to see if they make a difference.

It's not illegal in SOME states ... it's illegal in ALL states. EPA mandates that ANY working catalytic converter CAN NOT be removed from a vehicle within the first 50K miles. Not that I give a ****, don't get me wrong, I care about the environment, but if the car passes emissions without it, why bother having it smile

State "smog check" standards can be pretty lenient relative to how cleanly a car really ought to be running. Personally I would never remove the cats on a car.

Speaking of that those state inspectors don't know jack. No offense here to anyone who is an inspector. But my buddy and I took his '92 RX-7 to get tested and they took one look under the hood and then said he passed. They couldn't even figure out which vacuum line to clamp off so they ok'd him and we left. They only know what they are trained to look for. Like I said no offense to anyone but it's the truth.
