I just got back from the American Le Mans Series race at Mid-Ohio and got 35.9 MPG (highway) with my 95 Contour (Duratec V-6, 5 Speed)! It was set on cruise at 72 mph.

I have only owned the car for a month and was getting 28 - 29 mpg highway prior to this trip. I have no clue why the gas mileage shot up 5-6 MPG.

Anyone get similiar results with their Contour?

I was getting about 39-40 mpg on the highway (@ about 70 mph) with my old contour- 4cylinder atx- can't believe you got such good mileage on your duratec though!

The new contour- 3L SVT- has gotten about 22 mpg on mixed driving.

My car gets 30 mpg mostly highway, some city/hills. I'm sure I could up it a bit w/ a new air filter, fuel filter, tire inflation, etc. Keep in mind this was with a full car of stuff from college too. I would say that 35 mpg is not unlikely. You also use less gas w/ the cruise control on, since you speed is constant and not fluctuating like when you put you foot on/off the gas.

My 2001 Honda Civic LX got just around 35 on average...

Don't tell me a 10 year old car, with who knows how many miles on it, is getting the same as a car designed to get that much mileage...

Oh, I know what it is...My car was romped on all the time...And in reality, since it was rated to get between 32 city and 39 highway, I should have been getting somewhere between 45 and 50?

Sorry...Don't think so...

My 96SE Duratec MTX has hit 34MPG several times. When it did, I was doing 100% highway driving, averaging probably 70MPH and the weather was hot (i.e. the air was less dense so not as much fuel was being dumped in).

Before I installed my MSDS headers, the car would only get 32MPG on the highway, so the headers have helped a bit too.

Given the right terrain and weather conditions (i.e. tail-wind), I think 35.9MPG might be possible.

I'm averaging 28mpg mixed driving, so I'm sure all highway that would shoot up to 33+. So i don't doubt your #'s.
