Looking for two bikes. One for a friend and one for me and I need some suggestions.
First up, I want a full suspension bike that's around the $1000 range. I have an 8 year old Trek hardtail and it's been great from the get go so I'll keep it. I was thinking maybe a Fuel 70 or 80 or a Kona Kikapu. Most of the riding is singletrack or crosscountry or whatever they call it nowadays. No freeriding or downhill stuff or jumping off of roofs. Not too sure which Cannondale model falls in that price range.
Next, my friend is looking for a hardtail that's roughly around $450. It's his first mountain bike and he'll be riding with me so the same x-country stuff applies. So far he's liked the Specialized Hardrock, Trek 4300 and a Marin (forget the model).
Also, we're not buying used or online.
I'll probably bump this up after the weekend to get some input from anyone who may be at SZ.

Most of the big brands make a large selection of bike in all price ranges. The Fuels are cool, and have good reviews. Probably the best thing to do is to go check out what some nice, larger local shops have to offer. Check a couple, so you can see different brands. Find something you like and check : MTBR.com to see what others say about it. Good luck. Good job getting a noobie involved in Mountain biking.

I 2nd the notion to check out www.mtbr.com The reviews section has TONS of reviews of every kind of bike imaginable. To get the best deal you're probably better off getting an older model since many shops (at least in larger cities) usually will have some leftovers from the previous model year(s) and will probably give big discounts on them just to move them. You can then usually find a better specced bike than what you'd get if you bought the latest model. I personally have a Trek VRX-300 which is what the Fuel line evolved from & can vouch for their quality. They don't make 'em like that anymore though, but the Fuel's are supposed to be pretty nice for the price. My suggestion though is that if you're looking in the $1000 range you'd find a MUCH better hardtail than a full-suspension. The Giant Ranier is tough to beat in that price range. Granted, finding a decent less expensive FS bike is getting a lot easier nowadays so you'd probably be able to find something decent in that range. KHS makes some decent looking FS bikes that aren't too expensive, but I can't personally vouch for their quality. Most def. both of you go to a reputable local bike shop and try some on for size so you can see what's out there locally in those price ranges. Good luck

I got the trek 4300 and for the money, it is a nice bike. It puts up with every kind of abuse imaginable(from running headlong into trees to jumping off large jumps). It is a very solid, light weight bike that will put up with most riding, and is good on the road too. All in all, The Trek is the best in my mind. Fuji also makes some nice bikes in that price range too so check those out if you don't like the others. As far as yours, I odn't know much about high end bikes, but Jeep does make a 2-wheel drive bike and some make shaft drive bikes to . good luck.
