I am working on my buddys 2000 contour with 4 banger. A week ago the timing belt broke. 120k on it!! He took into a shop and they replaced the belt, but not the tensioner, After they got it up and going they put it on there diag. equipment and said that #4 cylinder had a bent valve and was showing unburned gases exiting the cylinder.Car is drivable and runs ok, just a touch rough.

Hebrought it to me to check out. I run a compression test and all 4 cylinders show from 155 up to 167 psi ( bythe way, #4 had the second highest reading) . So I dont believe any valves are bent. So I thought I would double check the cam timing. I machined a tool at work to align the cams. Pulled the valve cover and sure enough. They were not even.

I proceed to bring #1 to tdc and pull the belt off the cams, then SNAP! the exhast cam has the variable timing on it I did not know about. (the haynes book never even mentioned it.)

My Question to you folks is How do I put everything back in proper time with the spring loaded exhaust cam?

Thanks

Dam, this is why I'm giving up my 98 to get away from these VCT's. When ever I get the time I've got a free Mercury Sable 96 waiting on me.

Does anyone know of a good forum for vulcan engines?

DANG! I wished I had found this info when I did my 98 a month ago. I've been turning wrenches from 16 and 38 now, Every thing used to be so simple. I sat there for an hour looking at a half tooth differance, scratching my head afraid to put it together. It runs ok but how much will a half tooth afect preformence? Will VCT compensate? Makes me want to go back in to make sure. Been watching mileage changes and power band. 28-31mpg (HWY) sound right? and about 3500RPMs she starts to pull you into the seat. This is the only Contour I ever drove so not sure how well mine should preform?

mine hovers around 30 mpg, so I think you're okay. If you haven't thrown a CEL then you did good. VCT is a harsh mistress when you have to set timing.

Yeah I had the same thing happen to me, made me sorta feel a compulsion to check it too.

Than like a day or so after I fixed it I got a CEL, and I was sorta afraid to find out what the heck was wrong, it wasn't related but it scared me for a little.

What I wanna know is what benefit does VCT give us 98+ owners? Is the powerband different than the pre-98 tours? It seems like something must be different or ford wouldn't have bothered. Of course you can't apply logic to that actions of large businesses.

Here's what I think (and remember this is pure speculation).

VCT is capable of advancing or retarding timing a whole 2 degrees on the exhaust cam. Wow. 2 frickin' degrees

What good does that do? Does it really give emissions any benefit? BTW, that's the entire purpose of VCT - emissions control - not horsepower.

Ford put allllll this time and effort into designing and instating this component so there has to be a reason. I blame bureaucrats. This seems to be a move to appease the Feds in some form.

Ford was going in a very specific direction with this platform, but I don't know what it was. How many other cars from the time do you see running around with CNG stickers on 'em? I can say NONE unless I'm on a military base.

So CNG and VCT were probably part of a plan Ford had to either receive a kickback from the government on the manufacture of the cars, just barely meet or exceed some current or upcoming pollution regulation or to guarantee sales for use on Federal installations.

FYI, I'm not running around w/ a tin foil hat on I just find it odd that such an expensive part was created and it really does nothing except cause problems.

EDIT: thanks again for the s/n suggestion Cris'pus

Y/W.
I'd agree that it's a politic thing cause recently, shareholders were complaining about supposed lack of emissions control in Ford cars (they prob mean trucks and the explurgion) cause we have the first hybrid suv and the pzev duratec 2.0, the 500 has LEV II status and they praise the stang GT for lower emissions.
Note: I found out that the new Mustang GT has dual VCT. I was like WHAT? And so I wonder how tuners will deal with that, probably the same way or better than us.
Quote:

Variable Camshaft Timing ââ?¬â?? Power Without Penalty
Variable camshaft timing was a key in the quest to wring more power from the Mustangs 4.6-liter, three-valve MOD V-8 engine, while simultaneously improving efficiency and reducing emissions. VCT lets allows the valves operate at optimum points in the combustion cycle, tailored to the engines speed and load at that instant.

Yeah so we get dinged with a meager 125HP while new VCT actually helps for HP gain!!!

We introduced VCT so no wonder it's such a pain to work with. I'm sure present-day emissions control is HP friendly.
