lately I started to notice a weird sound on my duratech. basically a whine/ hummm (not the moose) but rather a lower pitched one similar to a WW1 jeep tires rolling). It is audible at a speed between 10 -say 40 mph. any clues? You could mistake it for a bad tire humm but I doubt it is so.

Any ideas? I have a vibrating tensioner pulley but the noise only started a week ago and the pulley has been like that for a while longer.

Thanks

The pulley COULD have gotten worse, however a bad bearing would rumble like that. (like a whirring or buzzing at speed.
Also, the noise may be more prevalent upon turning one direction, and less prevalent when turning the opposite way.

If you want to make absolutely sure, jack up the suspect side (remember, NORMALLY a whirring on a LEFT turn is actually the right wheel, as weight transfers to that wheel) and see if you can wiggle the wheel/rim at ALL up and down. If you can, change your bearing. (lucky you: You can do it yourself.. check out the how-to on bearing/hub replacement in Duratec Maintenance)

Thanks Ray;
but the humm is actually some where in the engine. I am starting to feel an association with roughness in the gas pedal while it happens. Think of it as if you have an imbalance in the intake air that makes everything slightly rougher. Could it be intake related? I have shifted to neutral while its happening at slow speeds and it did not seem to change . I know it's tough to find out like that , If I find anything worth mentioning, I will let you guys know. I can almost certainly relate it to the speed range between 20-40 mph.

Update:

I think it's a wheel bearing. Why? it is almost on most of the time starting at 20mph and up, most noticeable between 20-50, not engine or RPM related at all and more pronounced while turning left. BUT, it's not the commong whirr whirr that people tend to describe but much like a heavy bus or truck on smooth pavement going fast. That Whiny humm, wooo wooooo sort of noise. Could it be something else?

Time to verify, then.

I stated the procedure above.

simple, and done in less than 10 minutes. You'll know for sure, then.

Sounds to me like your RIGHT wheel bearing is out...
