can one live without a heater core?
and is the leaking heater core the reason my car has been running even hotter than usual?

to my understanding, you need your heater core, and yes it is running hotter than normal cause the spot where the leak is, is letting air into your coolant system and creating air pockets in your system which is bad(if one gets stuck).
