The one thing that you should know is that every single little thing you'll ever need to know about a contour is on this site. Yes things go wrong like on every car. If you stay up on maintenance then it'll last you awhile. BTW, there are already threads identical to this, try searching. Other then that welcome to CEG. There are a bunch of A-holes on this site don't let them get to you. they mean well

If you are looking for super fast straight line performance, these aren't the cars for you. SVT's are quick, but they have severe traction problems when you get into the upper power numbers. Check the water pump right away on it. Original ones are known to go bad. Don't take fast, hard right hand turns unless you have an oil reserve on it. Other then those things, they are great sleeper cars.

As was mentioned searching will get you tons of info but you may have trouble initially sifting through some of it.

The long-n-short of it is that these cars are as reliable or more so than most others and generally not expensive to fix.

They're strong suit is handling and top-end not off-the-line acceleration. They're 60ft. times aren't very good and that hurts them for serious 1/4 mile work. They handle well and can be great track-day, Solo II, street cars without having to put too much money into them. You can't buy anything nearly as good for the money. My SVT's would out run WRX STi's on the highway and on a road course along with plenty of other high dollar cars. They're also fun to drive because they're quite well balanced. Not as well balanced as my M3 (gotta update my sig) but way better than most.

Jason, I know there's lots of discussion here regarding this but my feeling is that this hasn't been proven for street use and for track work using the 1/2 litre additional oil seems to work fine.

My SVT did at least 1,800 laps of a very demanding road course on race tires with over 100,000 miles on the motor and it's still running very strong. The course has a flat 3rd gear 180 degree right-hand turn, right after a very highspeed 4th gear right/left combo off the back straight.

Everyone has a different opinion but my personal experience has been good and I've seen new Explorers with 3!!! spun bearings which definitely weren't from hard right hand turns.

Fill your oil to 1/2 L over spec., and you'll likely be fine from an oil starvation point of view. Everything else is open to the engine gods.

Regards, Alan

For the money they are tough to beat. Not great straight line but well balanced. They are just a lot of fun. If you shop around you can get a pretty good deal. I do not hammer mine off the line so my diff is still in one piece. Other than that I have the same maintance problems. I also have smoked a few "hot" cars, especially where there are turns involved.

cons:

- bad fuel system; weak fuel pumps, returnless style causes 'surges' in 3rd where there is no fix

- weak drivetrain; 3rd gear syncro's commonly go, stock diff blows apart easily unless lsd is installed

- bulletproof motor with an achilles heel of oil starvation during sustained right hand turns (cloverleaf on-ramp) at rpms higher than 3k. Heads to not drain properly and pan becomes dry imploding the engine. "fixes" not proven: accusump, 'dmd', lastly a 3.0l swap.

- throttle issues ie. throttle 'hang', must keep intake system and iac stupidly clean and place a restrictor within the iac piping.

- *not* a drag monster, nobody's broken 12's, very few are in the low 13's.

pros:

- cheap, a european style sport sedan for a domestic price

- fun to drive, comfortable

- sleeper factor

I know it's your feeling, but the truth is that it is mainly an on the street problem, not on the track. (particularly in such areas as clover-leaf on-ramps)
