My friend has a 96' Contour GL. So he had one of the high pressure lines replaced for the power steering and a new timing belt. So we got it back and it was running awesome, smooth etc. Until I saw that the power steering fluid was low. So i accidently filled the rest up with brake fluid. We started it up and there's a Loud clanking coming from the cam gears. we flushed out the entire steering system and properly bled it all out and the steering is fine. But there is still insanely loud clanking from the cam gears. I think the timing is off or something???? HELP PLEASE!!!

Its a NEW BELT AND TENSIONER and there's lots of clatter in timing belt cover and cam gears.

Are you sure you didn't just kill the power steering pump?

Take off the serp belt and see if it shuts up.

I don't know, but the water pump is going out...Power Steering is perfectly smooth and nice now after we put new "Power Steering Fluid" in and bled it out. No squeeling from pump anymore. But we took off the timing belt cover and the belt flops up and down over the cam gears. We tried to get in there and tighten up the tensioner belt but it's way too difficult and these cars are not easy to work on. We would try to find out where the problem has started from but this car is just to hard to work on.

Your issue is unrelated to the PS. Take it back to the shop he had the work done.

If you're going to try and tighten up the tensioner yourself it will be easy to do so once you remove the engine brace otherwise it's pretty much impossible to put your hand down in there. To do that you will need to support the engine with a jack and then you can safely remove the brace. The brace is attaced with 6 nuts (18mm i believe) just remove that and everything will be alot easier. Good Luck.
