There was no DOHC V6 in the Grand Am...perhaps it's the Grand Prix's 3.4 Twin Cam you're referring to? If so, yes, that was a nice engine (also used in Lumina & Monte Carlo till around '97), but with not quite the punch the blown 3800 has today.
The Grand Am you want to watch out for is the old 180 hp H.O. Quad 4.
