Not sure how to explain this but recently everytime i go to fuel up at the local gas station, i get the automatic shutoff repeatedly. ive tried turning the nozzle, pulling it out a little, and going slowly.. but nothing helps

it seemed to be after a certain amount of fuel pumping it shuts off automatically..but the tank is empty when it shuts off.
basically it took me 10 minutes of constant pumping to get $15 into the tank which is really annoying. Ever since then ive been putting in $5 at most cuz i dont wanna stand there all day pump-click..pump-click..pump-click.

anyone had a similar problem? my only guess is that for some reason it foams up activating the shutoff, but i have no reaso to why it would do that.

any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

One of the posibilities is that the flapper valve on the bottom of the fill pipe is stuck. There was a TSB about this. There was also a recall for the 95s for the same issue. It seems that the valve can be damaged by methonal if your gas is blended with it.

If that is what is wrong, from what I remember you need to replace the fill pipe. You need to at least partually drop the tank for access.

If it makes you feel better, it comes and goes in waves.

don't know if its the gas, location, or temp.. but SOMETHING makes it better/worse..

I usyally just give up.. .drive next door to another store and it works fine(the shutoff flap on some doesn't help, either)

My '98 had this. Ford did a warranty fix that replaced that bottom flapper. It still stuck a couple of times but has been OK for years now. I still carry a 2-foot long section of 3/4" fuel-resistant hose to jam down there, but haven't used it.
