I was changing my oil today when I noticed this crap that was all gummed up around my right front brake "stuff." I'm not too familiar with what all is behind the wheel, I haven't had to do the brakes since I got the car. My father was kind enough to have a complete brake job done when he gave the car to me 18K miles ago. It's not on the left side. I'm wondering if it's old engine oil that's somehow dripped down to whatever brake cable that is, because we've never gotten the filter outta the car without spilling some oil. That's my only guess, anybody else have a clue?

I would check the cv axle boot for a tear because it looks like that stuff is grease that has been flung from the joint. If that is the case and the joint is o.k., you can put on a new boot.

Looks like old grease/oil residue caked up with brake dust and dirt to me. Anybody else feel differently?

It's that or tiny elephants are taking a dump all over your car.

One more vote for:

CV joint/boot grease. When rotating, it will fling this crap all over, usually including the inner edge of your rims. Check the boot for tears AT the metal ring that clamps it on, on BOTH ends (small ring, and larger ring) and along the boot itself.

and DO NOT buy a "quick boot".. the opened boot that you connect with screws along the seam.. they are crap, and won't hold.

You can re-do the entire boot, after re-packing the new one, with a simple tool, that you can BORROW from autozone.

if not, it usually is only replaced as PART of the entire CV assembly.. (ouch$$)
