I'm not sure what you're asking, still. Let me go look at my car and figure out what you mean.

Okay, so you need to loosen the bolt, and then get the ball joint back on? I don't understand what you mean by "the proper one". It is a Torx bolt, with a nut (you said 17mm) on the other side. You need a Torx bit, maybe a 30 or 40, I'm not sure, and a socket for the nut.

I believe the Torx size is a T50. I also believe that the original ball joints came with the Torx fastener (as my 98 SVT did). I suspect that the other side (with the 17 mm hex) is probably an aftermarket replacement. I replaced my pass. side ball joint recently and the replacement fastener was a 17 mm hex (Moog ball joint; not sure of the P/N).

Why what blew up? The half shaft or the ball joint?

check out the how-to for wheel knuckle/bearing replacement and there is a parts list and pictures of how to remove and what is stock (in regards to the ball joint)

under "Ray's How-tos"..

I would think that the bolt joint went first, and took the shaft w/ it.

just to confirm: the OEM bolt is T50, the nut is 18 mm
