ok, i was due for my oil to be changed. I crawl under it and notice the ass load of oil caked all over the pan. I thought, "oh great, my motors going on me!" (i said a few words that i cannot express here) So i wiped it clean....and i KNOW i didn't see any oil spots where i park...so it couldn't have been leaking oil. I let the oil drain and put the plug back in....i go to take the filter off and i notice how the oil is draining from there. Its hitting something then running down the oil pan as it is jacked up....is there a way to get the oil from running all over the pan or am i gonna hafta get a roll of towels every time i change my oil?

Try this:

after draining the pan/car of oil, and now you are replacing the filter.. take a phillips screwdriver, and poke a hole in the edge of the filter. where the "walls" meet the "top" (the curved edge) Once you do this, the amount of oil in the filter will drain from that hole, and won't run everywhere..

then: as an added bonus you can push that screwdriver in a little more in that hole, and use the screwdriver as leverage to get a stuck filter off (without using a filter wrench, etc)

I always take tinfoil and wrap the exhaust manifold so it doesn't get any oil on it when changing the oil.
