First thing first: take it to a DIFFERENT shop than the one that did your repairs and get an inspection done. They might see something that the guys who were looking at it for a while might miss.
From the sounds of things (opinion here) if you had the subframe bolt tightened, and it still seems loose, that would be the first place to look. My money is on a bent subframe, or a damaged body mounting point.
And double check the strut mounting. Just a feeling I get readin your post a couple of times.......
Hope that this helps!

if thats the case, is there anything you can even to do fix these problems (short of replacing the subframe)?

Could also be the strut thrust bearing that needs servicing or replacing. My car does that with my GC's if I don't keep them greased and it only happens at low speeds making parking lot type turns. The popping in my case is actually the spring binding and then freeing up.

Not sure what to do if you have those issues.
Get it inspected first. Then you will know what you are dealing with.

I had the same problem. My mechanic said it was a broken spring. It was very hard to detect but he found it. Check the very top of the springs for breaks.

This is where my wife's spring broke that I just replaced. It was on the very last coil.

If it's a consistent pop-pop-pop it could be the strut bearings need replacing.
