Since I bought my car in 1998 I have went through at least eight waterpumps. I can give you a little advice, if they are going out as quick as you say, you need to change your thermostat and your cap on your coolant tank also check your coolant and see if it meets the ford requirements for the contour. Never mix colors orange/green. After checking all of the above, I could get mine to last about every two years.

We replaced the water pump on my 98 2.0 Zetec in June 2004. This is an Autozone water pump.

We are having a heck of a time getting the pump out again, as removing the engine mount does not provide the clearance needed to pull the pump free.

The chiltons manual says to turn it 180 degrees, but any way I twist and turn it there's no getting it free.

Last time we took the crankshaft pulley off to get it out.

We tried jacking up the engine a bit to provide more clearance, but that did not help. Also we were afraid of jacking it up too far.

Any suggestion on making water pump removal easier?

Thanks,
Tara

I have 162k on the original water pump in my 95. I also still have the original alternator.

Living life dangerously...

Just recently I had the waterpump, pulleys, tensioner, and timing belt changed on my '96 with 105k on it, and I'm glad I did. I just bought it in March, and didn't know it's history at all. I assumed these parts were never serviced, and I was right. Once the old pump was out, you could tell the impeller was loose and worn. The pullies would grind instead of spin freely. The belt was in surprisingly good shape, though. Anyway, I now have peace of mind that that aspect of the engine is completely taken care of.
