Hey,guys as the title says my speedometer broke today. I searched around and found several references to a "vehicle speed sensor". Here what happened..past week or so I have noticed the speedo needle bounce a little. Today, I was driving down the highway about 70,and I watched it drop straight to zero at 70 mph. It has not moved since. Is it possible the cable broke,or did this sensor go bad?? Any one have the same thing happen? Any other information on cost, location of cable/sensor etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
FYI.. 2000 SVT about 70,000 miles

Only early 95's had cables.

Your VSS sounds like it definitely broke. It can be the wires, (not cable), coming out of the sensor but highly unlikely.

General area to look at:

Sensor "pigtail". this is a connector that is between the main wiring harness and the sensor itself. The SENSOR is on the lower rear of the transmission, so I couldn't get a pic without taking out the air-intake system, battery, etc However, if you find this pigtail, and then follow the wires towards the center of the firewall (up in this picture) it will start heading downwards and in to the sensor itself.

just another shot of the pigtail.. You can see the grn/red and wht/blu wires in these two shots..

wht/blu wire is the SIGNAL wire to the dash.

Keep me informed of what you find.. MY sensor started acting funny, and dropped out, turns out that was the problem.. the pigtail wasn't "snapped" together, and I got a 5xx code, too.

its an electronic control speedo, and easy to replace. I did mine it just unscrews going into the tranny from under the car just close to the subframe. It has an electrical plug into a black plastic gizmo...I cant remember what I paid, but It was not that expensive. If that is your problem, and its not the actual drive cable that turns the electronic end its not that difficult. I suspect it to be the sensor end myself. Mine was a 95 Mystique...cable into a eletronic sensor, dont know if yours is the same.

Nope 95's were the only year that were cable driven. His 00 is going to be different.

Thanks alot guys, I just went out an looked. I found the connection. It appears to be intact from the top(top 2 wires not broken). I just parked it so it's too hot to stick my hand down in there. The bottom 2 wires look to be ok as well. I'll have to get it in the air and check where they connect to the tranny. Thanks alot for the pix.
I appreciate the help!
