I was wondering if there was any other digital cable recorders available other than TiVO. I dont see the reason of paying a monthly fee. Is there anything else that can record. TIA

ReplayTV is another one. If you have directv and have the platinum package, they don't charge for TiVO service.

Can't you still get MSN TV up there? Most cable providers now have a DVR option - I have mine through Charter Communications.

You could put a TV tuner card in your computer, like ATI's All-In-Wonder, which comes with DVR-like functionality. These are getting cheaper by the minute and is essentially free after the initial investment.

If you're up for a mini-project, and are fairly comfortable with linux, you could build your own using MythTV.

DVR. Are you looking for alternatives to TiVO that are free? DVR only costs $5 a month.

I have one through the cable company (Time warner) and it isn't nearly as good as Tivo or Replay TV.

You could build a HTPC and go that route if you don't want to pay for the service, although that hardware is going to cost you more$$$$

We can get that DVR service here in MI too.

The HTPC route will only work if you dont mind going from digital cable, down to analog, then back to digital which will have a quality drop on you HD channels. Digital cable requires a cable box and the cable box only outputs analog signals. You would have to record with the S-video port (the one component input card is $200+) and use an IR-Blaster to change the channels on the cable box. For analog cable however, an HTPC is great.
