i am having this problem on my home network... i don't really know too much about computers so maybe you guys can help. as i am sitting here on the internet, xp keeps flashing the little info buble telling me that a local area network cable is disconnected...i have checked, rechecked, and triple checked all of the connections and all is well. i have gone so far as to replace the lan cables and still no dice. even changed the ports that the computer is plugged into the router. nada.
what could be causing this? i am using a motorola cable modem, and d-link wireless router. my computer is linked to the router via cable. it is the main computer on the system. my little sister's computer is wireless as is the laptop and niether of the two have the same problem. what gives?

Network card could be bad. Cheap to replace if you feel comfortable doing so.

Or bad cable, which is even cheaper to replace.
Or bad port on your switch/hub, which is not so cheap to replace.
Try a different port on your switch/hub. Then, try replacing the cable. Then move on to replacing the NIC...

he stated that he already tried to differnet port and cable theories.
my guess is it might be the d-link router, i set my brothers appt up with one and it had some issues.

why is it that it only does it on the wired computer...like i said, the wireless computers operate as they should?....i am beginning to wonder if it isn't the router. ihave read elsewhere that you basically get what you pay for.:(

sounds to me like you have narrowed it down to either the network card or the router. see if you can borrow a known working card or get one. if that still doesn't fix things then start looking at the router.

Unplug the cable that runs from the modem to the router and plug it into your computer so the router is no longer part of the setup. If you get a connection without a problem then it's not the NIC. One thing you might want to do is click start>control panel>system>hardware>device manager>network adapters. Double click on the adapter and then click on the tab says power managment and uncheck the box that says "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
Also your post is kind of unclear, do both computers still connect to the internet?

Actually, dumb question, kinda, but you don't have a firewire port or a wireless port that you're not using, do you? I have a main network card, which is fine, but I had to disable an additional network connection because of the icon in the system tray. XP particularly doesn't like unconnected network devices of any kind, even if you have one perfect connection set up.

I don't know cable modems work differently, but my d-link router is programmed as the network gateway & uses/controls access to the DSL modem. All computers just plug in to the d-link or access via wireless.
I don't have a direct connection between the modem & any computer. Perhaps this is the source of the problem. Like I said, I've no experience with cable modems, so I don't know if they are handled differently.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
