I've been searching through old posts trying to find an answer for this one, but so far have come up short. Several talk about the issue, but I haven't seen once that solved it yet.

Anyway, my '99 SVT will not turn over. The battery has been charged, all the electrical systems work, I can hear the fuel pump cycle. But it doesn't crank over. When I turn the key from run to start, there is no change. The car has been stored over the winter, but I moved it from my father's garage to mine about a month ago and it ran fine then. We had a nice weekend here, so I wanted to drive it down to the car wash but it refused to fire.

I tried both keys, same result. I don't recall a blinking PATS light, but I was not specifically looking for that either. Any suggestions? There is a Ford dealer about 2 miles away, but I'd prefer to not have to tow it down there...

Rick,

Before you go through the process of tearing out the starter:

You have power to the dash, correct?
  • Check to see if all fuses, and relays are good.

  • Ignition switch/Starter Relay fuse
    Power Distribution Box
    Fuse 4
    40 AMP fuse

  • Starter Relay itself

  • Check out that PATS light, see if it stays fully illuminated or flashes at ya, when you turn key.

  • Perhaps something as far as the power wire going to the starter having come undone, or rotting off.

  • Lastly, check the starter itself.

I looked in the distribution box under the hood, didn't see any 40A fuses. I didn't know which slot to look for at the time, so I'll check again. When trying the key forward, the PATS light stays on steady - no blinking.

Check your battery, again. I had this EXACT problem two days ago.

BRAND new battery, even, and perfect charge.

Key in, turn to "on"..
PATS light stays on all the time.
NO dash lights (except a MICRO flash of the ABS light.. top right)
no start.. no attempt.

multiple times I check and no start, same symptoms.

So.. I am like.. well.. I hope that's not a PATS issue..

I hook up a jumper cable, JUST in case, and it starts right up..

from then on, no problems... and I don't know why.

Well, the battery shows full charge on the gage that the charger has. I cleaned the terminals, but everything else works. I tried starting it with the charger hooked up and set to "engine start" mode, but to no avail. Will using actual jumper cables to another car be any different?

That I wouldn't know..

I don't know what kind of amperage your starter has.. but a running car has a TON (550cold to 650+)

Rick-
Could be the key ignition. Try jiggling the key around to see if you can get some life out of it. If it's not making contact when you turn it, it won't start.

I'm having a similar problem right now. The car starts fine if jumped but otherwise will not start. Battery seems to be fine, as all dash lights, radio, etc. work fine. I'm guessing it's either the starter or the alternator. Sitting at the dealership right now. My last payment on the car is May 1st and I knew I wasn't going to glide into that day.
