hi all.i bought a 1995 contour se with 51000 miles on it .all is GREAT except a flashing 5-1 on airbag light.dealer said he will fix at his cost since i noticed it on the test drive.he was all upset he missed it etc. ..brought it in to him and "his guy"couldnt fix it.they brought it to a ford dealer and 3 days later they were still "looking"for problem.i said f it and got my car back today....i need my ride etc. 5-1 is still flashing..my question is why are all my fm and am presets still there?all the threads i saw said DISCONNECT BATTERY BEFORE SERVICING AIRBAG if it can be tested and serviced with battery i guess im just p //// off that they cant find the trouble.the bottom line is i got a great car with the airbag light still f!! flashing!should i bring it to a different ford dealer to check?its all my cost now.

Take it back and say fix it!
Otherwise, yes, you did get screwed. Don't let the stealer get away with this...If they said they will fix it, make sure they fix it, and get a rental in the meantime, and make them pay for that.

If the jackass sets off the airbads, there goes your front windshield. It sounds like one of the sensors is busted. I would look for some damage up front though. There was a recall on them a while back. Moisture would get in the connector or something.

It's one or the other.
Either it was never replaced from a previous crash or never fixed under the recall. Either way it is a federally mandated safety item and a dealer can not legally sell it without it.

If the dealership has its act together (which, given their inability to repair the problem, seems unlikely), they might have used one of several devices designed to keep the customer's radio presets saved. These usually consist of nothing more than a 9-12V battery that plugs into the cigarette lighter, to provide backup power to the radio memory. Actually a pretty good idea, but I don't know if it is recommended for use when service is being done on the airbag system.
But yeah, you should take it back and have them fix it. I had the airbag sensor (front center sensor) problem too, and it was covered by a recall.

With it being a Federal mandation, should he(the consumer) have to pay for it, even at dealer cost?

NO!
Because they are a "licensed" reseller they are required to sell the car with all federally mandated parts intact and working.
If it was a private seller or auction vehicle it is "as is" or buyer beware.
If they will not fixed the car 100% for free then I would get 100% of the purchase price refunded.
