I had this random thought one day...why did I have to replace one of my tail light bulbs with a 3157 wedge bulb when the owners manual calls for an 1157?
Finally I had to see for myself, and sure enough...the driver side tail light bulb is an 1157, while the passenger side tail light bulb is a 3157 wedge.
Any takers on why Ford may have fu-barred???

Sure it was Ford? Did you buy your car new and never replace the taillight before?

What year is the car? I dunno if my taillights are the wedge base, but I do know my turn signals in front are... Also know my old 96 had the cylinder bases all around.
Maybe if you have a late 97 or early 98 they ran out of one...

The answer is such...
The pre-98 models used round bulbs while the post-98 use wedge -style. My '98 Mystique was caught in the middle. It's production date is April 1997 and still uses the round bulbs even though it's a 1998 model. I just recently found out because I needed to replace one of the sockets since water that was getting into the housing basicly cooked the original.
I'm guessing that somewhere along the history of your car, that taillight housing was replaced along with the socket. What year is your car?

it's a 99, i think it was built in late 99, an se mtx v6...maybe a socket went bad and was replaced with the wedge instead of 1157??
i did buy it used, but i am considering replacing one of them so they match, preferably 1157 round fit.
do you know if the round fit sockets were ever put on any contour for the front turn signals???
thanks guys,
Bobby

Man, I always got on my mom whenever she needed to get a taillight, because she was always getting the wrong ones. This could explain it...

well, my 99 was built 12/3/98, and takes the 98 style bulbs, when the manual specifies a different bulb. I don't know why you have 2 different types though. Does the harness look spliced??

Ya know, thats what i forgot to mention, is that I was never able to find a splice, which is why this issue totally threw me off.
maybe i really do have a "one of a kind" contour hahaha

All of the application charts I have looked at have all been wrong about bulbs at all 4 corners of my 98 Contour. Wedge up front and round in the rear for me.

You won't find a splice because the lightbulb socket fits to the same harness in both cases.
I think in the case of the '99, someone swapped out one of the rear lights (for whatever reason ) with an earlier version and along with it, changed the socket for the bulb to make it fit. The harness is the same, regardless.
