I hope to God you meant "knock on wood"
HA-HA!
Actually, I did. But I'm English, and therefore prone to using strange language, often misunderstood by my colonial brethrin!! "Touch wood" in 'English' English means the same thing as "knock on wood". The expression "Wood" itself, the North American connotation, isn't used often in the same way in English English. My Bad!! BTW, We do have millions of interesting expressions already for that. For a giggle, check out Rogers Profanisaurus NotWorkSafe on Viz Magazine's Site

The car overheated without any warning. And no, I wasn't "ignoring" it. When I bought the car, I paid a mechanic to look it over.
And even if I were mechanically inclined, how the heck am I supposed to deal with a duel-overhead cam in a tight engine compartment?
The car I had before was a 1992 Toyota Tercell. It was running strong with 160,000 miles on it. Somebody hit me and I had to replace it with another car (the Contour). Note one thing. Other than brake pads, new tires, and oil changes, I paid NOTHING to fix the Toyota.
My Ranger (just bought) has a checklist of required maintenance at specific mileage. The previous owner saved all receipts and meticulously performed that maintenance. That's what I do. And that's all I should have to do, unless I have a junky car.
If a car is going to be a money sucker at 60,000 miles, it's garbage pure and simple. And when you compare the Contour to many other options (Taurus, Ranger, Tercell, etc.), it's completely obvious.
And as for being handy with repairs, that's all fine and dandy. However, people have to do what makes them money. By performing additional duties at work, I can easily up my pay. (In fact, I paid cash for the Ranger, with several thousand left to pay student loans down). I'm not going to spend hours trying to fiddle with a bad car when I could spend that time making money doing what I've best at.
It's like this. My father is a homebuilder and very good at it. A few years ago, he took time off work to replace his roof. After three days, he had it half way done. And then he started thinking about it and called a roofer to finish the job (in eight hours, at a big savings). You see, sometimes you save money by doing what YOU do best and letting experts handle your self-help projects.
Sincerely,
Scott

That sucks scott. Looks like you got a lemon.
I have a 98 auto 4cyl that currently has 75k miles on it. I have never had to do anything to it other then a tires, oil and gas. Its unfair calling all type of one car junk due to your experience. I am sure there are plenty of people out there that had lemon toyota's. Sorry it didn't work out for ya, but I think your are being overly harsh.

So? I know people with '95 Contours with 200,000 miles on them who haven't done anything but that either. And I know people with relatively new Tercels that are gigantic moneyholes too -- does that mean that "Tercels Suck" or that "Tercels are Garbage"? No, it doesn't. It's one case out of thousands.
Bottom line is your Contour was garbage. As a whole they generally are not.

This is true, but who takes time off work to perform preventative maintenance on their car?
Last time I checked I don't get paid after 5pm or on Saturday or Sunday anyhow. So it doesn't matter what I do, I'm not making money at it. Are you going to tell me that you spend every waking moment making money?
Saying that you don't work on your car because the time is more valuable to you doing something else -- like playing with your kids, or even just sitting around enjoying your weekend, is one thing. But not working on your car "because it takes time away from making money" doesn't even make sense unless you're some sort of workaholic freak.

I'd much rather have a Cavalier than a Kia
I dunno, I'd much prefer my Kia over any Cavi I've ever drove.

Of course, that's sitting on bags, with 4 12" Orion subs in the back, and its now running 18" knockoffs to match its new Kandy green paint. =)
And FYI, its a 97 Sportage, so its had TONS of problems, just much less problems than any of the Cavi's I've owned.
Good luck, Hitman. One word of advice, however. When you jump into the Cavi forums, don't act like you did here. Don't assume you know more than people who've been working on the Cavi for years, after owning on a few days. Maybe then you won't earn as many enemies over there, and can enjoy help and support from fellow Cavi owners, instead of flames and ridicule.

Thats a nice car. I like Cavaliers I OWN a 1996 Cavalier with 132,000 miles on the OD and the only problem that ever devloped is that the A/C Compressor died at 112,00 and that I accidentally knocked the Temp reader in the engine bay off (dont do that it makes it run bad)
Good choice and good luck my friend, My family has said for years If you take care of it, it will take care of you.
He couldn't take care of his contour. What makes you think he will take care of this car?

Ha, a Crapalier. And for those who are ripping on the Contiques do not belong on these forums, sure I've had my fair share of problems, every car has that. Besides the gas, tires, oil changes, etc. I also had to get the timing belt/water pump replaced before the belt broke. Also I had to get a vacuum leak fixed (replaced 02 Censor, MAF, and Engine Coolant Temp. Censor also, vacuum leak messed up those and thru a CEL, in other words those parts were still good, (NOTE: DO NOT, listen to autozone when they read a CEL)) I've had 3 CELs on my Stique so far, and it was just censors going bad, regular car wear and tear. Oh and mine is a 97 (got used in Sept. in 02) and has 70K, and I'm damned sure I could beat a Crapalier with a MTX, even if I do have a ATX. I got a 4 Banger with a ATX and proud, don't care what anyone else thinks.

ahhh... my brothers '05 f-150 has spent 35 days in it's first six months in the shop, and has a new engine now. so, i guess f-150's are crap too!
in all reality, most cars in the last 10 yrs are generally decent cars. my fiancee had a '97 cavalier than was stone, and i mean stone, reliable. there will always be people who have problems with their cars, it's the nature of them. and the more there are (i.e. cavaliers and f-150's) there will be more people who have problems.
02 Mustang GT... Tuned by Nelsons. Low 12's, anyone?
