I was at my local VIP Auto center Getting a NH State Inspection, And the dude who did it found that my passenger side ball joint was shot. (He showed me by Grabbing the tire while 3' in the air and Moved it top to bottom about 1/4 of a inch).Said my ball joint was junk and wont pass inspection . But if i paid $425.00 they would gladly take care of it. Now heres the problem....
This is the same guy who told my wife she needed new brakes on her truck and the dumb fool did them 3 months prior . so after informing the guy that he need be checking his records he changed his tune. you see what a perdictament im in. so what does this sound like. The estimate broke down something like :

Ball Joint -- $98.00
The rest was labor so...

I'm not sure how it works in NH, but here in MA you're in no way obliged to get your car the necessary repairs at the particular station you got it inspected at. In MA, you get a rejection sticker, and you have a certain amount of time to get it fixed.

Take it to a trusted mechanic, have them do it, and then go back in for the inspection again.

Sounds like you really need to find a new place to take your car. Look to see if they're AAA approved. You can usually trust places that are.

You can swap out a ball joint in ten minutes, in our cars.
I did it the easy way...grind off the three rivits, pound it out and bingo your done. Ask him how long it takes him and how he arrives at his BOGUS price. Max, 1/2 hr labour.
Get your car outta there quick.

Yeah, Stay far away from them. They hire people with brain damage who can't perform simple repairs. One time they left grease all over my rotors and the brakes overheated and failed. Almost put me and my kids into a truck. They have a standard for getting 350.00 worth of work out of you. Stay far away from VIP.

Hold on...your confusing me, are we talking the lower ball joint that has 3 solid rivits and the pinch bolt...or are you talking the upper tie rod end?
In any case...to remove the lower ball joint you simply take out the pinch bolt and knock off the three rivits and replace them with grade eight bolts and new ball joint. If your talking upper tie rod, you loosen the top bolt and use 2 hammers...brace one against the side of the knuckle and whack from the opposite side...and it pops free very easily.
