So I have an older IBM thinkpad laptop 600x. It has only 64mb of ram. I just use it to puts around with. I am going to add a 256mb chip than up load Winxp. My question is, is all laptop pc100 equal, or at least pretty much? I know some maybe faster and what not. The reason I ask is on pricewatch.com they have some memory ranging from $39 w/free ship on up to $100. On ebay IBM think pad memory goes for $90. I got this thing for free so I am not going to drop $100 into it. $40 ok now prob. What does everyone think? Tips sugesstions. Thanks

be sure it's the right kind of memory, that seems way too cheap... you need a 144 pin SO-DIMM, most likely, for a laptop, but I could be wrong. Check crucial.com for what you need. And yeah, it's all the same for what you need.

Make sure you run cpu-z to check what chipset your mobo is. Sometimes you are limited in terms of how large each so-dimm can be.

Sometimes the chipset will not support larger than XXXMB of ram... Like this Gateway laptop in front of me with a 400MHz Celeron (not upgradable ) will only take a max 128MB PC100 SODIMM.
I'll see if I can find the specs on that IBM for ya.
OH, and watch out about that cheap RAM on Pricewatch... A lot of the cheap stuff is generic which doesn't work with all chipsets like name brand (Kingston, PNY, etc.) ones do.
BTW, I got the 128MB PC100 at Staples or Office Max (don't remember) for $60.

If you go to crucial.com and put in the systems model number and it will tell you what you need and how much you can add. Don't cheap out on this or you may end up with major problems. Pricewatch is filled with some less than reputable vendors.

And MAKE SURE ITS NOT UNBUFFERED
I purchased some unbuffered ram that was specifically designed for servers, not PCPU's
