Can anyone help my trouble shoot? My 1998 V6 has developed a problem. At about 70-85 mph there is a very noticable vibration through the steering wheel, and in the cabin.

Might this be related to the wheel bearing? I know that I need one of those (driver's side I think - sound upon turning left).

Or is this just simple wheel balance? I'm about to rotate (front to back) the wheels/tires.

Any ideas?

try the rotate and balance. It could be a WB, but if it is speed-specific, then it is probably an out-of-balance tire in harmonics with the suspension.

it sounds a balance/bearing problem to me. I got the same trouble last year before I have two tires changed.
Sometimes , dirty stuff on the wheel also can cause the viberation.

Also, as an off note: Wheelbearings that go bad will NORMALLY be heard upon turning to shift weight ON TO that bearing

left bearing bad = right turn noise. (car shifts left and you hear it)

there ARE exceptions when you can hear it no matter what (straight driving, even)

More information...

This is a new problem that has only been happening a few weeks. I got my Timing chain guides and tensioners replaced and I noticed once when I was there he had the passenger side front wheel off during the repair. Since picking up the car, it has been making this noise.

Just coincidence? Or did he loosen or knock something loose... (I'm afraid my ignorance is showing here a little, oh well.)

I'm going to rotate the tires myself tonight (weather permitting) and see if that helps at all.

It's been really frustrating this past month. One day on a Thursday night my car started making this horrible noise. Had it looked at by a local (to my work) mechanic, he said it was something to do with the Timing chain, but he didn't have any time for a week + to work on it. Took it to my regular mechanic, 9 days later got it back.

Since picking it up it has driven like crap. Mechanic had broken a vacuum hose, and not tightened something and it was leaking a bit of oil which was burning off. He fixed all of those things (finally after several more visits- and he is not close to work or home), but now this shake. Frustrating. boo hoo

Allright I borrowed my FIL's hydraulic jack and rotated my wheels/ tires last night. (Can only do front to back because of the type of tires I have). It is not doing the vibration thing this morning.

As I did this, I noticed a weird wear pattern on the front tires. I will have to take some photos and put them up here.

Ignorance showing, but whatever. Is a strange wear pattern - outside of tires like 2-3 inches from the outside in towards center MUCH more worn than the rest- a sign of out of balance? Out of alignment?

Thanks for all of everyone's help. For now I have eliminated the vibration, but am worried about something being out of whack...
