Just as I parked my car tonight, I went to toss it in neutral and the shifter felt really loose, upon further inspection I found that it will only go into 1st and 2nd, any other position leaves it in first. I check the forums and most problems even similiar are clutch related, but the clutch is working fine. any ideas?

Check the bell housing (top of tranny.. between TB and firewall)

You should see two rods/cables connecting to two different levers on the bellhousing... this is your shifter linkage.. if one popped off, you would get this... Also, have a friend row through the gears while you look at them both to make sure that both move in their intended directions (both back, and forth...)

Also, remove the shifter boot (inside cabin, pops right out after you unscrew the shifter knob) and look at that end of the linkage... the fact that you said its SLOPPY suggests the linkage inside the shifter boot came undone...)

I had this same problem

First it was 1st and 2nd only ..then 4th and 3rd only. First time around it was the linkage...just came apart...once repaired it lasted about 2 weeks before the shift cable snapped in two...And lucky for me they dont make the 98 Shifter cable any more...so I had to go to a 99 cable...hope you fare better than I did. ($450.00 to get it back on the road)

Bahaha, the exact same thing happened to me except that after they fixed the shift cable the shift tower bolt broke. Cost over a grand to fix. Luckly the POS aftermarket warrenty that came with the car covered most of the work and I only ended up paying a couple hundred out of pocket.

I had the same problem once. A bolt came loose from the fire wall that was holding some other cables/wires there. They then became entangled and binded up my shift cables. Just a thought. More than likely, it's probably what the others detailed above. Good luck.

Ray, i owe you a great debt or gratitude. I feared that i would have to take it into a shop and dole out the 450-1000 that some of the guys were quoting. But the fix took me 20 min, and NO CASH.

For anyone having the same issue, get under the car and look near the firewall in the center, you should see 2 mesh covered cables, they terminate just on the drivers side of the top of the trans(orange and black connectors). Make sure that both of those connectors are perpendiculary(not sure if thats a word) affixed to the metal rods. I just popped the deliquesnt one back on, and i can shift again.

You owe me nothing... It is what we are here for... as repayment you can do the following:

Contact Todras (on CEG) and request, via PM, a Ford Factory CD for your car. Just make sure to tell him your year. He will send you his address, and you can either paypal, or mail a check, etc to him... $8 SHIPPED can't be beat, and will give you EVERYTHING on the car.. diagrams, etc.. nothing left out..

THAT is your fee... do this, and we will be even!
