i got a 1996 ford contour gl. i want to put subs in it. i already put in new speakers and head unit. i was wondering if anyone has done this b/c i dont know if i will need a capacitor or not. some people tell me i will and others say i wont. others tell me to just get a high output alternator. i will only be running 600 watts at most but most likely only 300-400. has anyone done this and if so what have u done. thank you so much for your help!

I don't think anyone has put subs in a Contour before ( ), but for 600 watts you probably wouldn't need one.

Subs in a Contour? I don't know if that's a good idea. Why not just play the factory speakers at real high volume?
....ok seriously though, no problem with 400-500watts in the 'tour

Try upgrading your cables first.

ive had a 600 watt amp in a beretta , the alternator was on its way out and teh lights would dimm alot
if ur alternator is new or fairly new u really wont have to worry about it, but i would get a 1 farad cap just to be sure and help prolong teh life of ur alternator
ur lights will dim but only during high volume low bass hits , nothing major but it will still happen
if ur really worried about it and want more power upgrade ur alternator

Hi, not sure if your running 2 amps or not (1 for speakers and 1 for subs) but here is a suggestion. This is based on my system and have no dimming whats so ever with a stock alternator.
I am currently running a RF550x for my front and rear speakers (70 Watts RMS x 4) and a RF350s for the subs bridged (350x1 RMS).
Power from battery (fused) to rear, into a fused distibution block, ( 4 awg input, 8 awg outputs ).
8 awg output to 550x for speakers. 1 ground distibution block - ( 4 awg input, 8 awg outputs ). 4 awg ground from chassis to distibution block. 8 awg groung from block to 550X.
8 awg power and groung from Dis. Block to .50 farad Cap. Then 8 AWG power and ground from Cap to 350S for subs.
Basically the Cap is in between the 2 amps and only hooked up to the Sub amp where you need it most. Works great!
If you want try hooking up your system first as though you might not even need to worry about a Cap or Alt.
