What would be the best home/home theater sub for under $325? It needs to be active (powered). I was thinking about one of the DIY kits from Parts Express.

What do the guru's think?

DIY is a good way to go, IMO. The kits are nice, but the boxes are kind of expensive if you can make those yourself.

The 250w Plate Amp is cheap power. A few options with thr driver,

Dayton DVC series, Titanic series, Adire Audio Shiva/Tempest, or Lambda PB will all be excellent and I think plenty of bump for your rump.

I have a velodyne CT 100 that I have to part with. Its in absolutely mint condition, and has barely been used. I can't use it because I live in a condo, and it's simply too loud. I hate to part with it but I have to due to the neighbors. Sorry guys for posting this rather than putting it in the classified as this was a spur of the moment post. If your interested, PM me and I can give you some more info. You can also email me at sly_cat@excite.com

PSB,,,the canadian company makes great subs that arent that expensive,,The SubZero line i think.
Velodynes are good also. Best for the money in my opinion are the ones made by Pinnacle speakers in upstate NY. They mainly sell direct.

Just go to www.audioreview.com and look at the reviews and look at classifieds...or www.audiogon.com

The PE kit is very nice, but the best bang for the buck would be DIY.

id say combine one of the PE plate amps, a homemade box, and either a lambda 12, titanic 12, or that cheap eminance 18 from PE would be much fun im sure. the 250 watt plate amp combined with that would only be around 200$ and im sure it would be crushing

I have assembled a couple of the Vance Dickenson designed 10" subs from Parts Express for friends and they are well worth the $$. The 250W (180W into 8 ohms) mentioned above is the same amp used in the kit. I use this amp in my own subs that use a Rockford 12" driver.

If you go to the web page showing the kits, you can download a spec sheet that will help you design the box and order all the needed parts. With a box of this type you need to properly reinforce the cabinet if you decide to build it yourself.

Titanic 10" powered sub kit

Titanic 12" active sub

Parts Express also sells a Dayton powered 10" sub for $100. While not of the same quality as the Titanic 10" and 12" subs, a pair of these for $200 will have decent output in a medium sized room.
