There is a kenwood powered sub, model KSC-WA62RC, that appears to be a great choice for someone who needs a little more bass, can't cut out their rear deck, and doesn't want the expense and hassle of separate amps/woofers/enclosures.

It's about 15" x 8" x 5". I figure I could mount it on the back of the back seats, or against a wall in the trunk.

Has anyone heard about this sub? Has anyone HEARD this sub?

Thanks for advice.

Brian

Mount it under the dash in the passenger side, or under the drivers seat. Makes more sense to keep something that small close to where you will be listening to it.

I had one in my wife's Miata for a while. It was okay. A single 8" in the rear deck would sound better. You don't need to cut anything up, just drill 4 holes.

I bought it for $60, tried it out, and then sold it for $180. laugh Ubid used to have much better deals.

If you've got any specific questions about it, fire away.

SVT Colin --

I'm running my door speakers off the deck. All i'm looking for is a little boost in the lower frequencies. I don't crank it much, and what I consider cranked, most people would consider "not so loud".

I also like that it's small.

I understand it would be ideal to put the unit in the passenger compartment, but as you know we don't have big cars, and putting it by the passenger's feet would really take up a lot of space (i know the unit is only 5" high, but that's a lot of leg room!).

Do you think that for my application -- bass to round out the overall sound -- trunk mounting would be alright?

My deck puts out 20 or 22 watts rms per door. The kenwood is 30 + 30w rms.

Thanks

Brian

id second the notion to place it under seat or somewhere else if up front if possible. i think if mounted and angled right, theres room up under where your feet are, maybe if you want to get tricky and wouldnt mind the cutting, you could midify your glove box somehow, though without cutting that would probably muffle waaaay to much sound. under seat or at the feet sounds good.

even if you dont want it to boom, go up front for good imaging

The wOOx is very, very small. You might be able to mount it to the underside of the dash in the passenger footwell (firing downward). In this location, it would sound decent.

As for trunk mounting, the wOOx would probably be just enough to fill out the low end in the very lacking factory system (but nothing more).

But, I think that its boom/$$$ is really low. Even a 10" mounted in a .5ft^3 (marginally larger than the wOOx) powered by a mono bass amp would absolutely blow it away and cost less too.

On the plus side, it is very easy to hook up, has tons of mounting options with the included hardware, and comes with all of the necessary wiring except a patch cable (it's also got speaker-level inputs for integration with the factory system). If the passenger footwell doesn't work, I'd probably mount it to the underside of the rear deck firing downward.

Oh yeah, the included wired remote with level, phase, and x-over frequency controls is a very nice touch. It's definately a great tool for tuning the wOOx to your tastes from the driver's seat instead of the trunk. wink

Colin,

Your advice is really great and appreciated. Thanks. THe underside of the passenger side is actually not a bad place to mount it. My only concern with that location is stupid passengers and snowy boots.

Also, even though bass is not as directional as mids and highs, I don't really want the bass to come from the "right" side of the car. I'd want it just a little more centered.

As for the price -- I can get one for C$300 (a whole lotta money!) but that's the best I've found so far. If I were to go with separate components, I'd probably end up spending over $200 on an amp, $50 - $150 on the sub itself, and I'd need an enclosure. Plus, I'd have to cut out the rear deck (for an 8") or get a box. Then I lose my trunk space (which I need).

I guess all I want to know is this -- will I be disappointed with the performance?

I know it's a pretty weak sub, but I don't listen too loud. It also takes up no space, which is handy.

If anyone out there knows of some alternatives in the $250 - $400 range please let me know. Unfortunately, all of the really cheap online stores don't ship to Canada, and even if they did, I'd get massacred on duty/taxes/shipping charges.

Thanks Colin and all.

Brian

For $300CN, yes.

For that kind of dough, I'd check out the Infinity Basslink or a 10" Powered Bazooka.

BTW, there's no need to cut the rear deck to mount an 8" sub. There's already a hole. Take a look at the underside of your rear deck on the passenger side. wink You only need to make a baffle out of some MDF and drill 4 holes.

attach it to the middle hump in the floor in the back, thats smack in the middle for ya :p

my only advice that i reeeeeeaaally stress with this neat but weak device, IN the cabin!!! take advantage of its size and convinience and do not waste it in the trunk, where it will be too weak to be worth it in a place thats often home to 15s in many cars.

Speaking of the Infinity Basslink, do you guys think it would sound decent in the trunk? Has anybody heard this sub?

I'm considering either the WooX in the cabin or Basslink in the trunk myself.
