I agree that the vast majority of illegals work their arses off for wages no American would touch. But at the same time we can't just open our borders for reasons such as the one posted up top.

Now I'm not one to advocate a half-arsed solution to this issue. So I'm coming around on the temporary work visa idea.

And I disgree that the jobs they do would disappear if immigration was reduced. Businesses would raise wages and therefore prices, which would of course have an effect on the overall economy. But there would always be people to do the work.

The work would get done. In the short run, it would probably raise labor costs to provide the goods and services currently provided by illegal immigrants. However, in the longer run, these industries would become more mechanized, creating good jobs for people designing, building, operating, and taking care of the machines automating the process done by a migrant farm worker.

My garbage was just picked up today... neither of the two men were illegal immigrants, and they make a living wage. Many agricultural areas manage to bring their goods to market without illegal immigrants picking them (some use students or other seasonal part time help, others are already more mechanized and automated.)

The social contract is broken. The responsible people of this nation have been stretched beyond the limit trying to pay for all the services people want to provide to the poor. And it's never enough, they always want more. Well, I say we've gone far enough, and the bill is as high as what the people can pay. You'll just have to do more for yourself, because we can't afford to do it for you anymore.

While the illegal labor may be cheaper, who is really saving if we are paying for it in health care? The only person making out is the guy employing the illegal workers since he's making a higher margin.

I've heard that the illegal immigrants have harsh living conditions.

Ding! DIng! We have a winner. This is the real reason politicians look the other way. Their donors want them to. The taxpayers get screwed. Not only that, but the poorest Americans get screwed, since the illegals drive their wages down through competition.

Supply and demand determine the flow of people into a job market. If no one wants to pick fruit all day, the wage payed will go up until it looks attractive to pick fruit. Once enough people choose to pick fruit for the higher wage, the wage levels will stabilize. (I liked the garbageman analogy, those guys make good money around here!)

My wife is a nurse from California. Not only that, when we went to Cali for vacation, I had to take her to the emergency room. I thought I had stepped into Mexico! We were the only Americans there. Hospitals like this one are losing so much money every month, that they are forced to close. When this happens, the remaining hospitals are put under greater stress. (For the record, my aunt was an illegal alien, and I have no problem with Mexicans. Heck, half of my family can speak Spanish.)

If you break the law, there should be consequences. Don't like it, then change the law. Until that happens, the US Army should be on the borders instead of in Iraq. Gee, stop pissing off Muslims and controlling the borders... you'd think that would be a good start towards reducing terrorism. By the way, I am a USAF officer on active duty, and I live near the Canadian border, which is a piece of cake to penetrate. My business is nukes, and believe me, it is scary that the government does nothing to stop Al Qaeda from taking a 90 minute drive and paying us a visit.

My uncle works mexicans in the field. Pretty sure they're not legal. They grow my tobacco tho, so I can't really complain about it. We gotta have cheap labor from somewhere.
