Ok so it was my understanding that the SVT 16" Wheel has a XXX/55R16..... yes, no?
I was looking in a tire sizing book and it showed the stock tire sixe to be a XXX/50R16
BUT another book shows that it's XXX/55R16
I put focus 16's on my tour last winter after i dented 2 rims at once (gotta love ohio roads), but anyways i put a 205/55R16 on the wheel. (as listed on a plus sizing guide in that same book that listed a XXX/50R16 as a stock size)
By doing this did I throw off my speedo, b/c both sets of info contradict themselves.

the difference has to do with the numbers in the xxx position.

215 / 50 / 16 = 24.46" tire height
215 / 55 / 16 = 25.31" tire height
205 / 55 / 16 = 24.88" tire height
205 / 50 / 16 = 24.07" tire height

If my memory serves me...
In '98 the SVT came with 205/55/16
In '99 it came with 215/50/16
same in '00

I don't know off hand what the stock dimensions were for other models though.

You're looking at .42" of height difference, yes it will make a minor difference to the speedometer depending upon what your car was origionally calibrated for.

Example
3rd Gear @ 4000rpm
215 / 50 / 16 = 49.5 mph
205 / 55 / 16 = 50.3 mph

a difference of .8 mph

I get these numbers by utilizing an Excel Spreadsheet someone on here posted a while back that does all the calculations for you when you alter tire dimensions.

The XXX is the width in mm, the 50 or 55 is the profile, but it's not a straight sidewall measurement, it's the sidewall expressed as a percentage of tread width. This is why a Miata with 195/50R15s actually has a full 1/2 inch less sidewall than a supercar with 315/35R18s.

98 & 98.5 had 205/55ZR16 - FireRocks (IIRC)

99 & 00 had 215/50ZR16 - BFG KDW

A 205/55 is 24.88"

A 215/50 is 24.46"

Deviation is 1.66%

why not go with 215/55/16?
It would give a slightly bigger sidewall(nicer ride) and maybe pick up a 1/2 mpg.

Because they are really tall = maybe rubbing, and definetly off on the spedo. Mine are 205/50... 1.3" shorter than those.

All true except they were Goodyear Eagle GS-C tires on the '98 & '98.5 SVT Contour. Goodyear discontinued the GS-C in late '99. Good thing too; they were really crummy tires.
