Well, I asked this before.... can't find the old post, so I'm asking this again. I bought a new battery because from time to time, after 24hrs of the car sitting still, I would need a jump. It happened again today which makes me wonder if its the alternator. Everyone says it is, but check this out; on my digital cap with the car running 30min after I needed a jump, it read 14.4 volts, and with the car off it read 12.8 volts. I am really REALLY hoping the alternator isnt the problem. I think it has something to do with the deck. The only time I happen to need a jump is when I physically press the "off" button and then remove the keys. How can that be a problem? Thats where you guys come in. You all know more than me, so could the fact that on my AVH-P6500DVD I have the emergency brake wire tapping into the ground wire so that I can watch DVDs while the car is in motion have anything to do with it? If it is the alt., can someone send me to a link where i can buy an alt and another link thats a how-to on installing?

sounds like you have a shoert some were or it could be you e brake thing

something is draining your battery when the car is off

doesn't sound like an alternator problem because if it was that the car wouldn't run more than 4 hours on a new battery

or something like that

Do you have any corrosion on the battery terminals?? Because if you do it can keep your battery from getting a charge. The cap going up in power means your alternator is working. I had this problem also and autozone tested it and said I needed a new battery.. turns out it was just corrosion.

When your car is off, is your amp still on? Sounds like a drain somewhere, yet your comment:

The only time I happen to need a jump is when I physically press the "off" button and then remove the keys.

Is very interesting, what happens to the cap when the car does not start? Does it still read 12V? Corrosion can be a HUGE part of the problem, it will show good voltage, but very little current will pass. SO you may hve 14V but very little amperage. this also would explain on bass note voltage dropping from 14.4 to 12.8 instantly. You do not have enough current to keep with the demand.

This is why audio cable is made with Oxygen Free Copper, the guys using "welding" cable will one day have a problem like you describe and wonder why.....

So new terminals? and does everyone agree that if it was the alternator, that the cap wouldnt read 14.4v?

I would start with a cleaning, I think baking soda will help clean away corosion. Also if you have a battery charger, put it on the lowest 12V setting (like 1A or less) and let it charge over night. And yes, if you get 14V when running the ALT is most likely just fine.

Wow, before I went to buy new battery terminals and/or blow wads of money on a new alt, I got my girlfriend to lay in the trunk and found out that the trunk light never goes off, so that is what was draining the battery. I'm stupid. Anyone know where the latch/button/whatever is that turns the trunk light on/off? I just took the light out for now

I had the same problem with mine when I first got it, took the light out and its all set now. I haven't yet attempted to figure out why it stayed on, but if you figure out, pls let me know.
